As the name suggests, foundation is the foundation of every makeup look, so finding the perfect foundation is the goal – well, mine anyway. Like many of you out there, I started my foundation journey with the classic Dream Matte Mousse foundation by Maybelline. Thankfully, I’m long past the days where I’d smother my face in the ten-shades-too-dark foundation with my fingers, and I’m finally at peace with my foundation selection. The journey in between though, was a pain in the ass (and my wallet). Finding the best foundation isn’t a simple task – there are hundreds out there that claim to do what you need them to do, and I’ve definitely met a few liars! Over it. My top ten have passed the strict rating system that we desperately measure foundations against in the hopes of you finding your number one (yay).
10. Urban Decay Naked Skin
Perfect 7! If you’re in search for a foundation with a build-able coverage, dewy tendency, and truly weightless formula, then Naked Skin is the foundation for you. Naked Skin is my ideal day-to-day summertime foundation – effortlessly thin, weightless, dewy, durable… what more do you need?!
Tip: If you tart this foundation up with some powder, durability increases and level of dew is controlled throughout wear.
9. MAC Studio Fix
A crowd favourite and I certainly know why! If all else fails, I know I can rely on my go-to foundation to fulfil my needs. Described as medium coverage by MAC, the Studio Fix foundation has no problem covering dark circles, scarring, and blemishes, without creating a heavy looking base. Studio Fix is a matte foundation, and only appears dewy after long periods of ware if not set with powder. A great all-rounder!
Tip: If you’re having trouble finding your perfect shade, MAC will have you covered – they’re famous for their spectrum of shades!
8. Too Faced Born This Way
If you’re searching for a dewy foundation – look no further!! The ultimate dewy foundation is Too Faced Born This Way – hands down! The formula is thicker than to be expected, with a medium, build-able coverage. Perfect if you have dull/dry skin that needs a little boost!
Tip: Powder the base to secure a set level of dew, otherwise the foundation will keep on dewing!
7. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Le Teint
Zoella’s confessed favourite foundation, and no wonder why! This has been a favourite of mine for a long time, and I love to use this foundation on my clients. No matter what skin type you have, this foundation is bound to make you look glowing whilst covering all the bits and bobs you want to conceal. I love it!
Tip: Pair this foundation with the Yves Saint Laurent Touche Èclat Conceal Highlight Contour Pen – match made in heaven!
6. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk
Classic. Luminous Silk foundation blankets the skin in a classic, silky, sheer glowing base, and is simply beautiful! Whilst it has build-able coverage, I wouldn’t recommend this to someone with problem-prone skin; however, for all you lucky ladies that aren’t in need of a great deal of concealment, this is the ultimate foundation for you! The formula is silky smooth, and it really shows on the skin – a celebrity favourite!
Tip: If you have problem prone or scarred skin but still want to use the foundation, prep the base with concealer before using the foundation, and again after if required.
5. Kat Von D Lock-It
Thank you Kat Von D! This is a truly remarkable foundation, and not for the faint hearted! The thick textured, full coverage beauty does everything you want it to without looking cakey like you think it would! Whilst the formula is a little thicker than I’d like, I simply cannot fault it’s full coverage longevity. A personal favourite!
Tip: The Kat Von D Lock-It concealer does not disappoint! The most beautiful concealer/foundation combination for those who are searching for serious full coverage!
4. Esteé Lauder Double Wear
The UK’s Number 1 foundation, and for good reason! If you’re after a long-lasting foundation to the extreme, this is your best bet. I’ve not had the opportunity to wear the foundation for its alleged ability of 15 hours of wear, but I’ve seen this bad boy go for 10 – yes 10 hours!! The coverage is medium, but very build-able, so for lovers of full coverage, longevity, and a dewy glow, Esteé Lauder has cracked your dream formula!
Tip: If you’re on a budget, opt for a long lasting foundation, it’ll last longer!
3. Nars Sheer Glow
The ultimate bridal foundation! The sheer glow foundation is an absolute favourite amongst my brides, and why wouldn’t it be? The clue is in the name! The sheer glow that the foundation provides is nothing short of impeccable. The photo-friendly foundation is medium – full coverage and very natural looking. My bridal favourite!
Tip: When trying to avoid photo flash-back, use a foundation without SPF, and pair with a translucent powder which guarantees to not make an appearance too!
2. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Even Finish
What a stunner! Long-lasting for sure. Natural looking? Hell yeah. Dewy? You got it! Just perfection in a bottle! This medium-full coverage foundation oil-free formula is luxuriously thin and silky, with thanks to the glycerin and sheer butter base. Skin feels moisturised and fresh, and with this on, you certainly look it too! With antioxidants within the formula, and vitamins C and E, you can look and feel good for up to 12 hours!
Tip: This is perfect for a holiday foundation! The long-wear foundation sticks with you through the humidity and protects you from skin damage with SPF 15!
1. Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able Full Cover
Remarcable! This gorgeous foundation is full coverage at its absolute best. Whilst you’d think it would be thick in texture, the astounding formula is one of the thinnest foundations I’ve tried, providing a glowing and dewy blank canvas. Once you try this underrated gem, you won’t look back!
Tip: A little goes a long way with this foundation, and one dab of product on each surface of the face is plenty!
